Wild Oats XI protest decision provides more questions than answers

Wild Oats XI has been confirmed as the line honours winners of the 2018 Sydney to Hobart after a protest relating to its use of the AIS tracking system was ruled invalid.

The Committee ruled that “for the protest to be valid under the Racing Rules of Sailing, a competitor with information about a potential rule breach must lodge the protest”.

Although the protest came about following a report from Black Jack, it was the Race Committee that officially lodged the protest.

As Black Jack did not lodge the process themselves, the circumstances dictated that the protest was invalid, so the matter was dismissed and considered closed.

Steve Barker joins Cam Reddin to explain how this decision was reached and why it raises more questions than it answers.
