Will Adam Ashley-Cooper be selected for the Wallabies?

With the Spring Tour set to officially kick off this weekend against Wales at Millennium Stadium, debate about the Wallabies side has well and truly begun

Wallaby coach Michael Cheika sprung a selection surprise in naming 34 year old veteran Adam Ashley-Cooper in the touring squad.

Speaking on the Macquarie Sports breakfast show, former Wallaby Phil Waugh was asked whether he thought Ashley-Cooper would line up for Australia, “Probably not. I think he’s probably been brought in just to be around the guys. If you look at where there’s been an opportunity within this squad it’s probably been around that senior leadership. Whilst Hooper and Pocock and some of the other guys have been doing a good job there’s just not that real seniority there. So to bring Ashley-Cooper in around the guys is more about growing the leaders  and how do you get that more experienced player in there in that environment.”

Despite Ashley-Coopers vast experience, playing over 100 tests for his country, Waugh believes the transition from Japan to test Rugby will be tough, “I think it would be very difficult to go from the Top League in Japan out into Millennium Stadium and into Twickenham, it would be pretty difficult.”
