Winx wins record fourth Cox Plate
Winx, the world’s greatest thoroughbred, has created history by winning a record fourth consecutive Cox Plate.
The Great Mare never looked like losing. Jockey Hugh Bowman pulled the trigger with 600m to go and Winx powered home to win by nearly two lengths from the Godolphin raider Benbatl. Humidor, who pushed Winx to the line in last year’s Cox Plate, rounded out the placings in third.
“To see her unleash as she does … she had them covered a long way from home,” said trainer Chris Waller as he choked back tears.
For Winx, this win makes it 29 in a row. It is also her 22nd consecutive Group 1 win, a world record.
And if that is not enough, the win took her career prize money to a staggering $22.8 million.
The atmosphere at Mooney Valley was electrified as 40,000 cheering punters and fans collectively realised the historical significance of the win.
