Winx’s farewell race revealed

Once you have won everything there is to win, you may as well call it a day. That is what Winx is expected to do after she won an unprecedented fourth straight Cox Plate on Saturday.

The question everyone has been asking is where and when her farewell race will be.

NSW racing boss Peter V’Landy’s has revealed all to Macquarie Sports Radio Mornings.

He said, “I have had some discussions with Chris Waller in regards to that. All going to plan and the horse is well, hopefully she will run in the autumn carnival here in Sydney [next year].

“What a day it will be on the 13th of April to see her run her last race at the Queen Elizabeth [Stakes]. It’s only justice because she is a Sydney horse and Sydney should be able to farewell her.”

He outlined her likely farewell tour will include three or four races in Sydney depending on whether or not she runs in the Apollo Stakes. The super mare’s schedule would look like this:

  • Apollo Stakes on February 16th
  • Chipping Norton Stakes on March 2nd
  • George Ryder Stakes on March 23rd
  • Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 13th

V’Landys continued, “She may miss the Apollo, because she did miss it last year. So it’ll either be the 16th of February or the 2nd of March and hopefully she’ll have 4 final runs in Sydney.”

That would mean she could potentially extend her winning streak to 33 before retiring.

However V’Landys cautioned that nothing is ever set in stone, citing the fact that in the past trainer Chris Waller has had to change Winx’s schedule at the last minute if her preparation requires it, “You never take anything for granted. Although in this situation being her farewell we would probably get a lot of notice because we’d really want to promote it and give her a Sydney farewell that nobody has ever seen before.”
